Straight seam welded steel pipes are divided into high frequency resistance welding and submerged arc welding according to the welding process. Straight seam submerged arc welding is referred to as LSAW, and longitudinal high frequency resistance welding is referred to as ERW.Compared with submerged arc welding, high frequency electric resistance welded steel pipes (ERW steel pipes) do not add any welding materials during the welding process in the ERW process, and the weld formation does not undergo a thermal melting state, but the weld metal undergoes a recrystallization process. Therefore, the formed weld seam is completely consistent with the chemical composition of the base metal. After the steel pipe is welded, it is annealed to produce the cold working internal stress and welding internal stress. In 1815 he mixed barrels of muskets with a burning system of coal lamps. In his revolutionary piping method, Murdoch used coal gas to be brought to lamps on London’s streets.Since the 1800’s, significant advances have been made in steel pipes technology, including the advancement of production processes, development of applications for their use and the development and qualification of regulations and standards.

Seamless steel pipes are produced by piercing a solid billet of steel to form a hollow tube. The billet is heated to a temperature that allows it to be easily pierced by a piercing mill. The mill contains a mandrel, which is a cylindrical tool that supports the inside of the tube during the piercing process.Once the billet is pierced, it is rolled and stretched to achieve the desired shape and size of the tube. This process is known as the extrusion process. The extrusion process can produce seamless pipes of various sizes and thicknesses, making them suitable for a range of applications.The main advantage of seamless pipes is that they have a smooth surface finish, which is essential for industries such as water supply, where cleanliness is crucial. Seamless pipes are also stronger and more durable than welded pipes, making them suitable for applications where high pressure and high temperatures are involved, such as in the oil and gas industry.

Seamless steel pipes obtained by hot extrusion are the result of a manufacturing process in which the acting force is compression. In hot extrusion, steel billets are pushed through so-called “passage lights” that are shaped and arranged on special tools, called matrices, so as to obtain the desired shape.This type of processing takes place at high temperatures to reduce the necessary forces and operate more easily on materials that, by nature, would not be especially ductile if processed at room temperature.

Billet-Heating-Mannesmann piercer-Elongator-Plug mill-Reeler-Reheating-SizerWhen a seamless pipe is made by rolling, the rolling method involves piercing the material while it is being rolled, and is suitable for mass production. The figure shows the manufacturing process used in the Mannesmann plug mill, which is a typical rolling process. The Mannesmann-type piercer reduces the material by rolls that are inclined obliquely to each other. When the round billet is rotated while being compressed in the diametric direction, the central part of the billet becomes loose, which makes it easy to pierce a hole through the center. This is called the Mannesmann effect. The pierced portion is expanded by the elongator, and the wall thickness is then thinned and elongated by the pug mill. The internal and external surfaces are smoothed by the reeler, and the final dimensional adjustments are made by the sizer.

The production process of general seamless steel pipes(smls pipe) can be divided into two types: cold-drawn and hot-rolled. The production process of cold-rolled seamless steel pipes is generally more complicated than that of hot rolling. In the sizing test, if the surface does not respond to cracks, the pipe must be cut by a cutting machine and cut into a blank of about one meter in length. Then enter the annealing process. Annealing needs to be pickled with acidic liquid. When pickling, pay attention to whether there is a lot of blistering on the surface. If there is a lot of blistering, it means that the quality of the steel pipe does not meet the corresponding standards. In appearance, cold-rolled seamless steel pipes are shorter than hot-rolled seamless steel pipes. The wall thickness of cold-rolled seamless steel pipes is generally smaller than that of hot-rolled seamless steel pipes, but the surface looks brighter than thick-walled seamless steel pipes. Much rough, without too many burrs.

Hot rolled seamless steel pipe can damage the casting structure of the steel ingot, refine the crystal grains of the steel, and eliminate the defects of the microstructure. In this way, the steel organization is compacting and the mechanical properties would be improved.This improvement is reflected in the rolling direction, so that the steel is no longer isotropic to a certain extent; bubbles, cracks and looseness formed during casting can also be welded under high temperature and pressure.

The production method of seamless pipe is roughly divided into the cross-rolling method (Mennesmann method) and the extrusion method. The former method is to first perforate the tube with a skew roll, and then extend it with a rolling mill. This method has a fast production speed, but requires higher machinability of the tube blank, and is mainly suitable for the production of carbon steel and low-alloy steel tubes. The latter method is to pierce the tube blank or ingot with a piercing machine, and then extrude it into a steel pipe with an extruder. This method is less efficient than the skew rolling method and is suitable for the production of high-strength alloy steel pipes. Both the skew rolling method and the extrusion method must first heat the tube blank or ingot, and the produced steel tube is called a hot-rolled tube. Steel pipes produced by hot working methods can sometimes be cold worked as needed.

The use of steel pipes was started by a Scottish inventor in 1815 connecting the tubes to convey gas for lights. In 1836, the United Kingdom had a patent for the production of seamless steel pipes by the extrusion method, but it was not until 1885 that the German Mannismann brothers invented the process of directly producing seamless pipes from bar steel. The Mannismann brothers first invented the second in 1885. The roll cross-rolling piercing machine, invented the periodic tube rolling machine in 1891, and in 1903, the Swiss R Stiefel (RCStiefel) invented the automatic tube rolling machine (also known as the head-type tube rolling machine). Later, continuous tube rolling appeared All kinds of extension machines, such as machine and pipe jacking machine, began to form the modern seamless steel pipe industry.

Steel pipe has been produced in the US since the early 1800s. Pipe is a hollow section with a round cross-section, primarily made for the transportation of products including fluids, gas, pellets, powders, and more. But steel pipes are used in a variety of ways. They are used underground for transporting water and gas throughout cities and towns. They are also specified in construction to protect electrical wires. Steel pipes can be strong, but lightweight. This makes them great for bicycle frames. They are also used in the making of parts for automobiles, refrigeration units, heating and plumbing systems, flagpoles and street lamps, just to name a few.

Floating/Drawing process of pulling a metal bar, rod, or wire through the whole of a die to alter its finish, shape, size, and/or mechanical properties. The tube drawing technique reduces the outer diameter, inner diameter, and wall thickness of the tube. The integrity of the surface of the tube is maintained, ideal for stainless steel tubes. 

The advent of rolling mill technology and its development during the first half of the nineteenth century also heralded in the industrial manufacture of tube and pipe. Initially, rolled strips of sheet were formed into a circular cross section by funnel arrangements or rolls, and then butt or lap welded in the same heat (forge welding process).Toward the end of the century, various processes became available for the manufacture of seamless tube and pipe, with production volumes rapidly increasing over a relatively short period. In spite of the application of other welding processes, the ongoing development and further improvement of the seamless techniques led to welded tube being almost completely pushed out of the market, with the result that seamless tube and pipe dominated until the Second World War.During the subsequent period, the results of research into welding technology led to an upturn in the fortunes of the welded tube, with burgeoning development work ensuing and wide propagation of numerous tube welding processes. Currently, around two thirds of steel tube production in the world are accounted for by welding processes. Of this figure, however, about one quarter takes the form of so-called large-diameter line pipe in size ranges outside those which are economically viable in seamless tube and pipe manufacturing.

In the nineteenth century, rolling mill technology was the only technique used to manufacture stainless tubes and pipes for industrial purpose. This rolling technique involved long procedures.  The rolled strips of sheet were formed into a circular cross section with the help of funnel rolls. The lap welding was then done on these rolled strips through the forge welding process.Thankfully with the advent of development and technology, various processes came into existence for the manufacturing of stainless tubes and pipes in India. Now-a-days, stainless steel pipes and tubes are manufactured with continuous tube mill using multitorch tungsten Inert gas. The filler metal or forge welding process is not used in this technique.
